House Of Black

Over the past few decades, we have been witnessing an accelerated growth in the production and consumption of clothing that is putting undue strain on our resources. We extract, process and discard too fast in an unsustainable way . Today, in the consumerism obsessed world the way of dressing and expressing yourself through clothing is an inevitable part for most of the people daily. Humans seem to have an on-going relationship with their outfits ever since humanity as such existed. Fashion tend to have various purposes; it can be a social activity of belonging to a crowd or just the opposite. It is a communication tool of self-expression and realisation. Now the question is, why waste? And how fashion is wasted?

As part of our HND Fashion and Manufacturing we collaborated with Rags to Riches and Govan hill bath houses. Our group chose House of black as a designer to produces a poster to promote up-cycling fashion. House of black is a zero-waste, sustainable fashion brand based in Glasgow.

As a group we visited Govan Baths and really loved the beautiful decay of the building. We intended to produce a poster that represents the House of black to inspire the young generation to see the importance in investing in recycled clothing. Using inspiration from mood boards and Govan hill baths houses we wanted to produce an edgy and grungy fashion poster that represents up-cycling fashion in a youthful way.

We were really inspired by the beauty of the raw decay in Govan hill baths and we wanted to incorporate its past into our photoshoot as it links perfectly with renewing.

In conclusion, this is a challenging process and needs new awareness, a lot of information and wide and open collaboration with various partners. More future-oriented thinking might help us in this process of planning and gauging how our design will affect consumption and the environment-tomorrow and even further. We need to create both new knowledge and understanding on values, ethics and green aesthetics and educate designers, manufacturers, companies and also consumers if we are to change the system. Our decisions today do lead us to some kind of future-hopefully a more sustainable one.
